BREAKEVEN — THE LINE THAT MATTERS

Lesson 43 of 72 · 3 min read · Beginner · Updated Oct 21, 2026
STAGE 6 — Options II: Pricing, The Greeks, IV · Prerequisite: GAMMA — DELTA'S ENGINE
TL;DR
  • Breakeven = strike + premium paid. It's the line that matters.
  • A 773 call bought for 18.38 needs SPY past 791.38 — not 773.
  • Draw the line on your chart the day you buy. No line, no trade.

New traders watch the strike. Pros watch breakeven. Breakeven is the finish line painted past the strike. New traders watch where the race starts (the strike). Pros watch where they actually start winning (the line).

TradingView chart · annotated · Examples use real SPY chain data from Oct 9, 2026.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  • Breakeven = strike + premium paid. Your 773C needs SPY past 791.38, not 773.
  • Draw the breakeven line on your TradingView chart the day you buy.
  • If price can't plausibly reach it in time, the trade is wrong — pass.
RUSTY’S RULE
No breakeven line on the chart, no trade.

WORKED EXAMPLE — STEP BY STEP

  1. You buy the 773 call from the Oct 9 chain for 18.38 — that's $1,838 per contract.
  2. Breakeven = 773 + 18.38 = 791.38. SPY must gain more than 18 points before expiry for the trade to make its first dollar.
  3. You draw 791.38 on your TradingView chart the day you buy. That line — not 773 — is the trade.
HOW THIS TRADE LOSES

SPY rallies hard to 785 and holds to expiry. The call pays back 12.00 of your 18.38 — a loss of 6.38 per share on a trade where you were right about direction. Below 773, the entire premium is gone.

THE PAYOFF PICTURE — AT EXPIRATION

MAX LOSS −18.38STRIKE 773BREAKEVEN 791.38PROFIT
Long 773 call, premium 18.38. Below the strike the loss is the full premium; between strike and breakeven it shrinks; above 791.38 the trade is in profit.

COMMON BEGINNER MISTAKES

  • Watching the strike instead of the breakeven line.
  • Taking a trade price can't plausibly reach in time.
  • Not drawing the line on the chart the day you buy.
  • Holding to expiry on hope after the line is out of reach.

DO IT ON PAPER

In TradingView, take a SPY option you're studying and draw a horizontal line at its breakeven — strike + premium. Leave it on the chart. That is the line the trade has to beat.
