MARKETS

Education is the Markets family’s free school — a progressive SPY options course in plain English, from “should you trade at all?” to reading the live board it teaches, the SPY Sheet.

WHAT THIS COURSE IS — AND IS NOT

Lesson 1 of 72 · 4 min read · Stage 0 · Before You Trade · Updated Oct 21, 2026
STAGE 0 — Before You Trade · Prerequisite: None — this is the start of the course
TL;DR
  • This course is free, written, and self-paced — no live room, no signals, no alerts, nothing to buy.
  • It is written by a learner documenting his own study — not an expert, not a mentor. His lifetime options P&L is −$9,458.
  • Its first job is not to teach you to trade. It is to help you decide whether you should.

A free course, written by a learner, that starts by trying to talk you out of it. Most trading courses open like a car dealership: shiny outcome first, fine print later. This one opens like a driving school run by a student driver who shows you his own dents. The dents are the point — you learn what the road actually does to people before you pay for any of it with your own money.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  • Free means free: no prices, no tiers, no upsell waiting at the end of this stage.
  • The author is a learner, not a guru — his lifetime options P&L is −$9,458, and wins and losses are both published here.
  • Nothing here is financial advice or a trade recommendation. It is study material, identical for every reader.
  • Deciding not to trade is a successful outcome of this stage — it has its own finish line, in Lesson 7.
RUSTY’S RULE
If a course won’t show you its losses, it is selling you something. This one shows its losses first.

WORKED EXAMPLE — STEP BY STEP

  1. Write down, in one sentence, what you want trading to do for you. Be specific: “extra income this year” and “learn a skill over two years” lead to completely different decisions.
  2. Now score that sentence against what this course can actually give you: a process, plain-English mechanics, and an honest look at the odds. It cannot give you income, shortcuts, or certainty — no course can, and any that says otherwise is the subject of Lesson 6.
  3. If your sentence says “I need this money to work,” stop here and take the exit in Lesson 7 with full marks. Needing trading to pay is the single most reliable warning sign this stage knows of — the research in Lesson 2 is why.
HOW THIS GOES WRONG

The wrong start skips this lesson entirely: straight to a brokerage app, a deposit, and a first trade copied from a screenshot online. Every later lesson in this stage exists because that order — money first, questions later — is exactly how the statistics in Lesson 2 get made.

THE DEAL, IN WRITING

Free, at your own pace, forever. In exchange the course asks three things: read the evidence before the strategies (Stage 0 before Stage 5), practise on paper before real money (Stage 4), and keep a journal from your first paper trade (it starts in Stage 4 and becomes the craft in Stage 9). No account, no email, and no purchase is required for any of it.

COMMON BEGINNER MISTAKES

  • Treating “free course” as “no risk.” The course is free; trading is not.
  • Skipping Stage 0 to “get to the real stuff.” The real stuff is why this stage exists.
  • Believing a teacher’s highlight reel. Check what they publish when they lose.
  • Confusing education with advice: nothing here knows your situation, and it never will.

CHECK YOURSELF

Q1. Who wrote this course?

Q2. Which of these will this course never give you?

Q3. You finish Stage 0 and decide trading is not for you. That counts as…

DO IT — THE FIRST DECISION

Write your one sentence: what do you want trading to do for you? Keep it somewhere you’ll see it — the top of the journal you’ll start in Stage 4, or a note on your phone. Every stage gate from here on assumes you know your own answer.
